New Scottish Government Technical Standards

New Scottish Government technical standards – with Changing Places requirements

Today, 12 July 2019, the Scottish Government has released the 2019 Technical Handbooks to come into force in October. While most of the handbook is statistical updates, there is one significant change relating to Changing Places toilet facilities.

All new construction that is:

  • Retail, assembly or entertainment building, which is over 5,000m², or has a capacity of more than 1,000 persons, or contains a swimming pool.
  • A hospital,
  • A secondary school providing community facilities

Must contain a Changing Places facility.

Where any of the above arises from conversion or an extension of 25% or more, such a facility should also be included.

Direct Access has extensive experience of Changing Places facilities in retail premises (McArthur Glen) and transportation (Virgin Trains, Birmingham International). We are available to advise organisations across Scotland on applicability of the new technical standards to your premises.
